Honestly, Cinque Terre is one of my favorite places not just in Italy, but in the whole world. I keep coming back every year. I can never get enough of the colorful houses, the deep blue sea, the magical sunsets, and the charming vibe. The food here is amazing, and every time I visit, I feel like I truly experience the heart of Italy.

Even though tourism has increased in recent years, the charm of Cinque Terre is still alive. It remains one of the best places to visit in Italy, and definitely one of the most beautiful.

Yes, definitely. Cinque Terre is one of the top places to visit in Italy.

The five villages offer a special atmosphere with their colorful houses by the sea, beautiful views, local food, and traditional Italian wine. These things make a trip to Cinque Terre unique and memorable.

Its location also makes it easy to add to any Italy itinerary.

When visiting Cinque Terre, you can walk along scenic coastal paths, try great Italian food, taste local wines, and relax on small beaches. It’s a place where you can enjoy both nature and Italian culture.

If you like seaside holidays, nature, Italian food, and peaceful villages, Cinque Terre is a great choice.

How to get to the villages of Cinque Terre

We have tried almost every way to get around Cinque Terre during our past trips, so here I’ll share all the important info and our personal experiences too.

What’s the best way to get there?

To be honest, there are no good road connections between the villages of Cinque Terre.

So the best way to visit them is by train or by sea.

By car

If you still want to go by car, be prepared for narrow mountain roads and very limited parking in every village.

Parking is a bit easier in Monterosso and Corniglia, but in the other villages, you’ll have to leave your car far outside and walk a lot.

That’s why I don’t really recommend traveling by car.

By train

Train connections are very convenient in Cinque Terre. Trains run frequently, about every 15–30 minutes, and travel time between villages is short, usually between 2 to 8 minutes.

The train line goes between La Spezia and Levanto, and it stops in all five villages. It’s a good idea to buy a ticket that covers the whole line so you can hop on and off in any village.

You can also buy the so-called Cinque Terre Cards, which give you unlimited travel within the Cinque Terre.

There are two types:

• Cinque Terre Treno MS Card: includes unlimited train rides and hiking trail access for one or more days
• Cinque Terre Trekking Card: includes access to hiking trails only

The cards are available at train stations, tourist info centers, and online. If you plan to explore several villages and hike the trails, I think the Cinque Terre Card is a smart choice.

Keep in mind that this is a protected area, so visitor numbers are limited to protect the environment.

By boat

Sea transport is another great way to explore Cinque Terre. From the boat, you can enjoy amazing views of the mountains and villages. The boats also stop at beaches and small coves.

Ferries usually run between La Spezia and Rapallo, stopping at the villages of Cinque Terre along the way.

Best time to visit Cinque Terre

The best time to visit Cinque Terre is during spring and autumn, when there are fewer tourists and the weather is pleasant.

The photos you see in this guide were taken in April and September.

Spring is especially good for visiting the villages of Cinque Terre. It stays light until late, so you have plenty of time to explore. The weather is also great for walking. In April, we didn’t experience big crowds, even on the weekend. We had time and space to enjoy the views and take photos comfortably.

May and September are also good months to travel to Cinque Terre. Just try to avoid public holidays, as the area can get very crowded.

It’s better to avoid the winter months, because many places are closed and the weather is often rainy.

Summer is not the best time either, as the Ligurian coast gets extremely crowded during June, July and August.

Weather in the Cinque Terre area

The weather in Cinque Terre is typically Mediterranean, but with slightly more rain than usual.

• Winter is mild but rainy.
• Spring and autumn are more changeable but usually very good for travel, with daytime temperatures between 10–25°C (50–68°F).
• Summer is the most popular time to visit Cinque Terre. The weather is hot and sunny, which is ideal for a beach holiday.

However, be aware that weather conditions can change quickly in Cinque Terre. Sudden storms are common, and strong winds often create large waves along the coast. For safety reasons, climbing or walking on coastal cliffs is not recommended during windy weather.

How to dress when visiting the Cinque Terre

If you are visiting the Cinque Terre, it’s important to wear comfortable clothes. The villages have many steps, steep streets, and hiking paths, so you’ll need comfortable shoes that are good for walking and hiking.

On the trekking trails, hiking shoes are required by law. This is unusual, but in Cinque Terre you can actually be fined if you hike without proper footwear.

Dress according to the weather:

• In winter, the weather is often cold and windy.
• In spring and autumn, it can also be cool and sometimes rainy, so bring a light jacket or raincoat.
• In summer, it can get hot, so light and loose clothing is best. If you’re going to the beach or spending time near the sea, don’t forget your swimsuit and towel.

Whether you’re hiking or just exploring the villages by train, it’s a good idea to bring a small backpack with you. Pack some water, snacks, and an extra layer of clothing. Walking around the villages can take time and energy, so it’s best to be prepared.

How many days are needed to explore the Cinque Terre?

The ideal amount of time to spend in Cinque Terre really depends on your travel style and interests.

I think you can explore the five villages of the Cinque Terre in one day, if you can dedicate the whole day, if you’re fit and only want to see the most important sights.

Two or three days are ideal for exploring all five villages of the Cinque Terre, with time to sit in local restaurants, shop in local shops and visit all the attractions of the Cinque Terre National Park.

Four or more days are already enough for relaxation, beaches and boat trips. You can visit other towns within driving distance of the Cinque Terre, for which I also make recommendations in this article.

The five villages of Cinque Terre

The five seaside villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare offer beautiful views of the Ligurian Sea. They give you a special chance to enjoy a mix of natural beauty, coastal life, and Italian culture.

Now that we have covered the basics, here is a closer look at the five villages of Cinque Terre, one by one.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is one of the five villages in the Cinque Terre region. It is the first village you reach when coming from the south and is one of the most popular places to visit in the area.

The village is known for its traditional colorful houses built on steep hillsides near the sea. The old town is full of narrow streets, steps, and terraces that make it fun to walk around and explore. Riomaggiore also has a small church called San Giovanni Battista. In the center of the village, you will find the port, where boat trips leave for the other Cinque Terre villages, as well as for Porto Venere and La Spezia.

Riomaggiore is also the starting point of the path called Via dell Amore. This short but steep trail connects the village with Manarola and gives hikers some great views along the way.

Riomaggiore is one of the most beautiful and charming villages in Cinque Terre. It is definitely worth taking your time to explore it during your visit.

Manarola

Manarola is the second of the five villages you see when arriving from the south. It is also one of the most romantic and breathtaking spots in Cinque Terre.

The village is full of colorful Ligurian houses built on steep cliffs. Narrow streets and steps lead down to the sea, with many spots where you can enjoy amazing views of the water and the surrounding hills. Sunsets in Manarola are especially beautiful, so it is a good idea to plan your visit around that time.

One of the best ways to explore the area is by walking the trail near the village. Manarola is known for its winemaking, so along the way you will see many vineyards on the hillsides.

Manarola is a stunning place and definitely a must see when visiting Cinque Terre.

If you are in Manarola, do not miss Nessun Dorma, a popular restaurant with the best view of the village and delicious local Italian food. Just make sure to book your table in advance using the restaurant’s app. Also check the opening hours before you go, as they can change often.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the middle village of the five in Cinque Terre. Unlike the others, which are all located right on the coast, Corniglia sits on a hilltop. Because of this, it is a bit harder to reach by train or boat. If you arrive by train, you will need to climb around 400 steps from the station up to the village. But once you get there, the atmosphere and beautiful views make the effort worthwhile.

Corniglia is also a little less crowded than the other villages, so it feels more relaxed.

From the main square in Corniglia, you can enjoy amazing views of the sea and the hills. The village is home to the church of San Pietro, which was built in the Middle Ages. Corniglia is also known for its vineyards and excellent local wines. While walking through the village, you can stop by small craft shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés to try some traditional food and drinks.

Some of the best views of Corniglia can be seen from the north along the hiking trail. These spots are a bit harder to reach, so it is good to think ahead and decide if the extra walk is right for you.

Vernazza

Vernazza is one of the most charming and photogenic villages in Cinque Terre. The narrow, winding streets of the old town and the colorful houses overlooking the sea give the village a special atmosphere. Vernazza also has a lovely little port where fishing boats and other small vessels are docked, adding to its coastal charm. One of the main landmarks in the village is Doria Castle, which stands on a hilltop right next to the sea.

There are several restaurants and bars in Vernazza where you can try local dishes like fresh seafood, along with famous Ligurian wines and traditional pesto.

Vernazza is also a great starting point for hiking. The trails around the village are moderately challenging, and the hills offer amazing views of the sea and the landscape. Some of the best views can be found on the trail heading north toward Monterosso.

Vernazza is a beautiful and romantic place that should definitely be on your list when visiting Cinque Terre.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare is the largest of the five villages and the northernmost village in Cinque Terre. It has the most hotels, shops, and restaurants, making it a great place to stay.

The village is divided into two parts, the old town and the new town. The old town is right along the coast and is full of narrow streets that give it a charming seaside feel. It is a lovely place to walk around and enjoy the relaxed Italian atmosphere.

One of the main attractions in Monterosso is its beaches. They are the biggest in Cinque Terre and are very popular.

Monterosso is a great place to visit if you are in Cinque Terre. It is an ideal spot for a peaceful vacation and also a good starting point for exploring the area. Several hiking trails begin here, and the views of the Ligurian Sea and the surrounding mountains are truly stunning.

Best things to do in Cinque Terre

When visiting Cinque Terre, there are many fun and interesting things to do in the five villages.

I’ll just list some of the most popular ones that I personally recommend:

• Hiking: The Blue Trail that connects the five villages is the most famous, but there are many other great hiking paths in the area too.
• Boat tours: Seeing the colorful villages from the sea is a special experience. If you have more time, try one of the many boat tours available in Cinque Terre.
• Trying local food: The area is well known for its pesto and other Italian dishes. You won’t be disappointed if you love good food.
• Joining a pesto-making class: At the Nessun Dorma restaurant in Manarola, you can take part in a pesto-making class. It’s a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it if you have the chance.
• Tasting local wines: Whether you go to a wine bar or join a tour, don’t miss the local wines. They’re also perfect souvenirs. You should also try Limoncino, a lemon liqueur similar to Limoncello.
• Swimming: Even though Cinque Terre isn’t famous for its beaches, you can still swim in the summer. Monterosso has the best beach area for that.
• Water sports: If you’re feeling adventurous, try kayaking, sailing, or diving. Many villages offer these kinds of activities.

So these are the things I think are worth doing in Cinque Terre and that can make your visit even more enjoyable.

Other questions about Cinque Terre

Let’s look at some questions you might have when planning a trip to Cinque Terre:

Is Cinque Terre an expensive place to visit?

Yes, unfortunately it is not cheap, even compared to other places in Italy. The biggest cost is accommodation, which can be quite expensive. Other things like activities, tickets, and food are usually about average for Italian tourist spots.

Which is the best village in Cinque Terre?

This is my personal opinion, but I would choose Manarola. I think the sunsets there are the most beautiful. The village is wonderful, and the Nessun Dorma restaurant offers a special experience and some of the best views.

How hard are the hiking trails in Cinque Terre?

The main trail that connects the five villages is called Sentiero Azzurro, or the Blue Trail. I have not walked it all, but from my experience, the trails are not easy. I definitely recommend wearing good hiking shoes, bringing enough food and water, and even taking hiking poles.

Can you visit all of Cinque Terre in one day?

Yes, we have visited several times for just one day. You can quickly and easily get from one village to another by train, so you can see all five villages in one day. It is a long and tiring day, but if you only have one day, you don’t have to miss out on visiting Cinque Terre.

Which Cinque Terre village can you skip if you have little time?

In my opinion, Corniglia and Monterosso are a bit less picturesque. So if you cannot visit all five villages, I would skip these two. Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Vernazza show the most beautiful views and charm, so these three are must-see places.

Which Cinque Terre village has the best beaches?

If you want the best beaches, definitely go to Monterosso. It has the longest stretch of beach where you can swim and relax.

Day trips you can take from Cinque Terre

Here are a few nice places to visit near Cinque Terre if you want to explore the area a little more:

Portofino

Portofino is a small, beautiful fishing village on the Italian Riviera, not so far from Cinque Terre. Portofino is famous for its colorful houses, luxury boats, and charming harbor. The village has narrow streets with shops, cafés, and restaurants. You can also hike up to Castello Brown for great views of the village and coastline.

You can reach Portofino by car, but many people prefer to take a boat from nearby Rapallo. The boat ride is a nice way to enjoy the sea and the views.

Portofino is a perfect day trip destination near Cinque Terre.

Porto Venere

Porto Venere is a charming and colorful town on the Ligurian coast, just south of La Spezia and close to Cinque Terre National Park. The town center sits along the water and has plenty of cafés, restaurants, and small shops to enjoy.

Some of the main sights in Porto Venere include Doria Castle, which shows the town’s historical roots, and the Church of San Pietro. This church is the symbol of the town and offers amazing views of the coastline.

From Porto Venere, you can also see Isola Palmaria, a beautiful island in the sea that is perfect for hiking or spending time on the beach.

Porto Venere is a lovely place to visit for both beach time and cultural experiences. It is a great addition to any Cinque Terre trip.

Beaches on the Tuscan coast

If you are visiting Cinque Terre in the summer, you should not miss the beautiful Italian beaches. The Tuscan coast has many great places to swim and relax, and some of them are just a short drive away.

The towns near Massa, such as Marina di Carrara and Forte dei Marmi, have excellent beaches. They are perfect if you want to spend a full day at the sea and enjoy the sun.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Pisa is a city in the Tuscany region, about 100 kilometers from the villages of Cinque Terre. It is most famous for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tower began construction in the twelfth century, but as the work continued, the soft ground underneath caused it to lean.

The Leaning Tower is one of the most famous landmarks in the world and is well worth a visit if you have time. Pisa’s historic center is also beautiful, with many impressive buildings from the Renaissance period.
