If you go in good weather and come prepared, then yes, I think it’s absolutely worth the hike.

For me personally, it’s one of my favorite spots in the Dolomites. It’s relatively easy to reach, yet the view is truly breathtaking.

However, there are several important things you should consider before going, and I’ll explain them in detail below.

Why choose the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint?

It’s one of the easiest viewpoints to reach in the Dolomites, yet the view feels truly incredible.

I’ve hiked here several times myself, and even in the stunning Dolomites, there are very few places that offer such an impressive panorama after such a short walk.

When I don’t recommend this hike

If you have limited mobility or are in poor physical condition, the loose gravel and uneven sections can feel challenging.

I also don’t recommend this hike if you have severe fear of heights. The narrow ridge can feel uncomfortable for some people.

And in bad weather conditions, I would never suggest starting the hike.

Best time to visit Cadini di Misurina

The best time to visit Cadini di Misurina is during the summer months, especially July and August.

Based on my own repeated visits, the first half of September can also be a good option if the weather is stable.

Outside this period, conditions are often too cold and wet for a safe hike, and the road to Rifugio Auronzo is typically closed from late autumn until early summer.

Many hikers recommend sunrise or sunset, particularly during golden hour. I’ve personally visited only in the afternoon and found sunset light especially beautiful.

One more important thing to keep in mind: afternoon rain is very common in the Dolomites. Wet gravel and reduced visibility can quickly make the narrow ridge section potentially unsafe.

Is Cadini di Misurina safe in bad weather?

In my opinion, it can become dangerous.

I’ve personally had to turn back once because bad weather moved in during the afternoon. Thick clouds covered the entire trail, and I could barely see my way back to the parking area.

If you see clouds approaching quickly, I strongly recommend turning back as soon as possible. The steep gravel sections of the trail can be dangerous in poor visibility and especially in rain.

If the weather forecast predicts rain for that day, I would not start the hike at all.

How to get to the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint

Getting to Cadini di Misurina is not difficult, but it does require some planning, and there are a few important things you should know in advance.

Getting to Rifugio Auronzo

First, you need to reach Rifugio Auronzo, the mountain hut located near Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

You can get there:

• On foot (I don’t recommend this, it’s very long)
• By bus (available in peak season)
• By car

We always choose the car. However, in very busy periods, the bus can be a better option.

Toll road information

If you drive, the most important thing to know is that the road to Rifugio Auronzo is a toll road.

After passing Lago Antorno, you’ll soon reach the toll gates.

Currently (2026 price), the fee is around €40 per car. You must book and pay online in advance. After completing the booking process and paying, you will be allowed to pass through the gate at your reserved time slot.

Important things to know:

• The fee is valid for 12 hours
• Parking is included
• Exit control is strict
• In high season, waiting times can be long

To be honest, this part of the process is quite complicated and not very well organized. It’s the most frustrating part of visiting the area.

Parking for the Cadini di Misurina hike

If you are mainly visiting Cadini di Misurina, I recommend parking near Rifugio Auronzo, especially in the first gravel parking areas on the left side as you arrive.

Don’t park too high up unless you are also planning to hike around Tre Cime. Otherwise, you’ll just add unnecessary walking.

If Tre Cime is also on your plan, then parking higher up makes more sense.

Hiking to the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint: Trail info

From the area around Rifugio Auronzo, the trail follows Sentiero Bonacossa heading south. First, the path goes slightly downhill, then uphill.

The uphill section can feel a bit slippery because of loose gravel. If you feel unsure, bring hiking poles. Proper hiking shoes are strongly recommended.

Along the way, you might even see grazing horses, which adds to the experience.

After a few hundred meters of climbing, you’ll reach a point where the trail splits.

• If you want the best viewpoint, continue straight. This path goes around the mountain and soon gives you views toward Cadini di Misurina.
• If you prefer a slightly safer option, turn right before reaching the top. This path will also eventually lead to the other side of the mountain.

Whichever route you choose, the scenery is amazing the entire way.

After a short walk along the mountainside, you’ll reach the famous Cadini di Misurina viewpoint, which appears on Google Maps as “Punto Panoramico Dolomiti”.

At the very end, a very narrow path leads to a small rocky platform, this is where most of the famous photos are taken.

If you want to see Cadini di Misurina from slightly higher up, there is also a small side path leading upward along the rock wall. After a short walk, you’ll get a very similar view, often without the queue. I personally recommend checking this spot as well.

How long is the Cadini di Misurina hike?

From Rifugio Auronzo to the most famous viewpoint and back, the total distance is about 3.5 kilometers round trip.

How difficult is the Cadini di Misurina trail?

After hiking it several times, I would describe it as easy, although some people consider it moderate.

With proper hiking shoes, it’s manageable for most hikers. The main thing to watch out for is the loose gravel and slippery sections.

What to pack for the Cadini di Misurina hike

Hiking shoes are essential.

Plus, in a small backpack, I recommend bringing:

• Snacks
• Water
• A rain jacket

No special equipment is required.

What to expect at the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint

Is it crowded?

Because the viewpoint is so popular, queues are common.

During peak afternoon hours, you may wait 20–30 minutes to step onto the famous rocky platform.

Most people stay only a few minutes, as others are waiting behind them.

I’ve even seen small arguments when someone tried to skip the line or stayed too long. It can feel a bit frustrating.

Photo tips for the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint

Here are some practical photo tips:

• The best light is at sunrise and sunset, especially sunset. The mountain peaks often glow orange, which looks incredible.
• Avoid cloudy weather. Clouds can completely cover the peaks. This has been our biggest challenge in the past.
• If you want to take photos of yourself, wear white, red, or yellow. These colors stand out beautifully against the grey, blue, and green tones of the Dolomites.
• The classic photo is taken from the mountain path, while the model stands on the rocky platform. A zoom lens or drone is often used.
• There are also excellent photo spots along the trail and on the higher path I mentioned earlier. I personally have many photos from there. No crowds, no pressure, and no one rushing you.

How long does the Cadini di Misurina hike take?

The total distance is about 3.5 km round trip from Rifugio Auronzo to the famous viewpoint.

However, based on my own experience, you should plan at least 2 hours for your visit. Between photo stops, waiting in line at the viewpoint, and short breaks, most people spend much more time here than expected.

Is there an entrance fee?

There is no entrance fee for the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint itself.

However, the road leading up to Tre Cime di Lavaredo is a toll road. The toll includes parking and is valid for 12 hours.

Is Cadini di Misurina part of Tre Cime di Lavaredo?

No, they belong to different mountain groups.

However, since the hiking trails start from the same area near Rifugio Auronzo, they are often mentioned together and easily combined in one visit.

My personal favorite is the circular hike around the three peaks. It’s about 10 km long. Doing both Cadini and the full Tre Cime loop on the same day can be tiring, but if you have the energy, it’s an unforgettable experience.

Lake Misurina

Located in the village of Misurina, right next to the main road, Lake Misurina (or Lago di Misurina) is extremely photogenic.

The reflection of the mountains and the historic hotel in the background makes it a perfect photo stop.

You can park near Via Guide Alpine and enjoy a peaceful walk along the lake. There are also good restaurants and comfortable hotels in the area, making it a practical base for exploring the region.

Lake Landro

On the way toward Dobbiaco along the SS51 road, you’ll find this beautiful alpine lake.

The best view is from the northern side, where you can see the green water with Monte Cristallo rising in the background.

It’s a short stop, but definitely worth it.

Lake Sorapis

One of the most iconic lakes in the Dolomites.

Reaching the lake requires a longer and more demanding hike, about 16 km round trip and 4–6 hours, depending on your pace. The trail includes exposed sections and obstacles, so I only recommend it for experienced hikers.

But the reward is unforgettable: a milky-blue alpine lake surrounded by dramatic rock formations.

It’s one of the most photogenic and unique places in the Dolomites, and absolutely worth the effort if you’re prepared.
