Every year, millions of travelers arrive by car, bus, or ferry to experience its unique charm. Its dramatic landscapes, delicious food, and romantic atmosphere make it one of the most amazing places in the Mediterranean.

Although the Amalfi Coast is one of my personal favorite places in Italy, I tried to stay as objective as possible while writing this guide.

In my opinion, the Amalfi Coast is definitely well worth a visit.

It’s one of those Mediterranean destinations that you can hardly find anywhere else in the world: stunning coastline, beautiful sea views, charming little towns, and amazing local food and drinks. All of this perfectly captures the Italian lifestyle and spirit like few other places do.

Overall, it’s absolutely worth visiting, but it’s important to think about when and under what conditions you go.

There are many reasons to visit the Amalfi Coast, these are the most important ones:

1. Stunning and one-of-a-kind views

It might sound like a cliché, but once you see photos of the Amalfi Coast, you’ll understand why it’s such a special place.

Without a doubt, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful and unique coastal areas not just in Italy, but in the whole world. You simply won’t find another place quite like it. There are other seaside areas in Italy, but nowhere else will you see such dramatic cliffs, charming towns, and breathtaking sea views all in one place.

That’s what makes the Amalfi Coast truly unforgettable. With stunning views and postcard-perfect scenery at every turn, it’s a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

2. Authentic Italian atmosphere

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most authentic and charming places in Italy. It’s where you can truly experience the best of Italian culture, landscapes, food, and lifestyle. This region perfectly captures that dreamy Italian spirit so many travelers are looking for.

Just take a look at a few photos and you’ll understand why. Colorful houses cling to the cliffs, narrow streets lead to hidden viewpoints with sea views, and historic churches and villas add character to every town. For amazing views, book a table at Rada Beach Restaurant near Positano’s main beach. Franco’s Bar (not a restaurant but a must-visit) is another iconic spot with one of the best sunset views in Positano. For a luxury dining experience, Zass Restaurant at Il San Pietro di Positano is famous for its Michelin starred cuisine and panoramic terrace.

In Amalfi, Lo Spuntino and La Preferita serve pizza and Italian dishes at good prices, while Pizzeria Donna Stella is a lovely spot tucked inside a lemon grove.

In Ravello, you can stop by Pizzeria A’ Gradillo for tasty pizza to go.

Or if you want to visit Atrani, Le Arcate offers wonderful sea views right next to the beach.

The Amalfi Coast and the area around it are full of amazing things to do, especially from spring to autumn.

There’s a wide range of activities to enjoy, from exploring the coastal towns to relaxing on the beach or taking scenic boat rides. You can stroll through famous towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, visit beautiful churches, admire local ceramics, or simply enjoy a coffee with an amazing sea view.

One of the most popular things to do is take a boat trip along the coast to see the colorful towns from the water. You can also join a cooking class, take a limoncello tasting tour, or hike one of the area’s scenic trails, like the Path of the Gods, which offers breathtaking views over the sea.

For food lovers, there’s plenty to try: from fresh seafood and handmade pasta to lemon desserts and local wines. Many restaurants even offer cooking workshops, where you can learn to prepare traditional Italian dishes.

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most romantic places in Italy, making it perfect for couples. Many honeymooners and couples choose this coast for its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking scenery.

It’s also an incredible place for content creators and photographers. Every corner looks like a postcard: colorful houses, dramatic cliffs, deep blue water, and winding coastal roads. Whether you’re shooting photos or videos, the Amalfi Coast offers endless inspiration and stunning backdrops.

Cons of visiting the Amalfi Coast

After looking at the good things about visiting the Amalfi Coast, I will explain why and for whom the Amalfi Coast might not be the best choice.

The downsides of the Amalfi Coast are:

1. Overly touristy and crowded in peak season

The biggest downside of the Amalfi Coast is that it has become overly touristy in recent years. Of course, there is a good reason for that, but for travelers who want to relax, it can be stressful at times.

From May to October, the towns are packed with visitors. Hotels and restaurants are often fully booked, and prices are much higher. Parking is difficult, and buses and ferries are often crowded. In some places, such as Positano or Amalfi, it can even be hard to walk through the narrow streets.

The best way to avoid the crowds is to visit in spring or autumn, when the weather is still warm but the atmosphere is calmer. Visiting in April, May or October is a great idea, as most places are open and the crowds are smaller.

2. Very expensive

Yes, the Amalfi Coast is one of the most expensive areas in Italy.

Hotels, restaurants and parking all cost much more than in most other parts of the country. During the high season, parking a car can cost between 50 and 100 euros per day, restaurant prices are often one and a half to two times higher than the Italian average, and accommodation can be several times more expensive than elsewhere.

If you want to buy souvenirs or beautiful local clothes, be prepared to spend over 100–200 euros for a single piece. Even public transport, ferries and small meals can add up quickly.

You can still enjoy the Amalfi Coast on a smaller budget if you plan carefully. Travel outside the busy summer months, stay in smaller towns, and eat at local bakeries or pizzerias instead of fancy restaurants.

While the daily costs are high, visiting for a shorter trip can still make it affordable and absolutely worth the experience.

3. Poor quality beaches

If your main goal is to spend time on the beach, the Amalfi Coast might not be the best choice for that.

Most beaches here are small, rocky and often crowded. Along the coastal road, you can also find a few hidden coves, but they are usually hard to reach and full of people during summer.

If you want a real beach holiday with wide sandy beaches, you’ll find much better options south of Salerno.

4. Difficult to get around by car

Getting around the Amalfi Coast by car is not easy at all.

I’ve tried it myself, and it can be stressful even for experienced drivers. The roads are very narrow, steep and full of sharp turns, often with buses and scooters coming from the opposite direction. The distances between towns are longer than they seem, and finding a parking space is a constant problem. In high season, parking can cost 50 to 100 euros per day.

So driving is not easy on the Amalfi Coast. It’s better to consider using buses or ferries instead. However, keep in mind that these can also get crowded, especially during the high season.

5. Difficult for people with limited mobility

The towns along the Amalfi Coast are small and built on steep hills, with many stairs and narrow streets. Because of this, getting around can be difficult for people with mobility problems or for families with small children. Using a stroller is often hard, and some areas are only reachable on foot.

If you belong to one of these groups, make sure to plan carefully and think in advance about how to manage the many stairs and long walks during your trip.

How to get around the Amalfi Coast

There are basically three ways to get around the Amalfi Coast:

by car, by bus or by boat.

By car

Driving can be more comfortable if you travel outside the high season and you are a confident driver. You can reach the Amalfi Coast from Naples or Salerno, crossing the mountains depending on your route. Almost every road leading to the coast is long, narrow and full of curves, and driving in high season can be stressful because of the heavy traffic.

Parking is also very expensive. In most towns, you can park on the street or in private garages, but always check the reviews of private parking lots before you go. There are often complaints about high prices and even minor damages to cars. So think carefully before deciding to drive. I usually travel to the Amalfi Coast by car too, but only outside the busy season.

By bus

Local buses are available, but they are often slow and crowded. The routes are not very flexible, so it’s not the most comfortable way to travel. I only recommend taking the bus if you really don’t want to drive or if you are joining a group tour.

By boat

You can take regular ferry boats or rent a private boat if you prefer.

The private ones are quite expensive, but the public ferries are a nice and affordable way to see the coast from the water. The views are amazing, and it’s a great opportunity to take photos. A short ferry ride between Positano and Amalfi is highly recommended.

There are also important ports in Naples, Sorrento and Salerno, which makes it easy to start or end your trip by sea.

Best things to do on the Amalfi Coast

I already mentioned some of these above, but let me quickly sum up all the best things you can do on the Amalfi Coast:

• Walk around the beautiful towns like Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and Atrani
• Take a boat trip along the coast to see the towns from the water
• Go for a scenic hike, such as the famous Path of the Gods
• Enjoy local food and wine tasting tours
• Try the local limoncello and have a refreshing lemon sorbet
• Relax at the best viewpoints with amazing sea views

Best time to visit the Amalfi Coast

The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is spring or autumn.

I especially recommend April, May and October. During these months, the weather is warm and pleasant, and there are fewer tourists than in the busy summer season.

In summer, the area gets very crowded, and walking around the towns can be tiring because of the heat. So it’s better to visit in summer only if you want to spend time at the beach or if the Amalfi Coast is part of a longer Italian trip.

Winter is not ideal either, as it’s often rainy and many hotels, restaurants and services are closed.

How many days do you need on the Amalfi Coast?

You can visit the Amalfi Coast in one day, but that would be a very quick and busy trip. The ideal time is at least 2 days, but it’s better to stay 3 or 4 days. That way, you’ll have enough time to explore the small towns, enjoy the views and food, join some activities, rent a Vespa, or go hiking.

So, I recommend planning 2 to 4 days for your Amalfi Coast trip.

Which Amalfi Coast town is the best?

That’s an interesting question, and after many trips to the Amalfi Coast, my personal opinion is clear: Positano is the best town.

Positano is the most famous, picturesque and vibrant place along the coast. If you could visit only one town, it would definitely be the winner.

Of course, Amalfi town is also beautiful and one of the top spots, but it doesn’t have the same iconic views or romantic setting as Positano.

Other wonderful places include Ravello, Atrani, Maiori, Minori and Praiano. I recommend visiting these if you want to explore the Amalfi Coast more deeply.

What to visit near the Amalfi Coast

If you have extra time in the area, or if you want to explore other nearby destinations, here are some great options:

• Sorrento: A lovely coastal town with great restaurants, shops and sea views, often used as a base for exploring the Amalfi Coast.
• Capri: A beautiful island famous for the Blue Grotto, the Gardens of Augustus, stylish streets and stunning sea views.
• Naples: A lively Italian city known for its pizza, history and authentic local life.
• Pompeii: The ancient Roman city destroyed by Mount Vesuvius, now one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Italy.
• Vesuvius: The volcano near Naples where you can hike up to the crater and enjoy panoramic views of the Bay of Naples.
• Procida: A small, colorful island with a less touristy atmosphere.
• Ischia: A larger island perfect for a day trip, known for its beaches, gardens and local charm.

The area around Naples is full of amazing places to visit besides the Amalfi Coast, so it is worth spending more time here, even a week or two, to explore everything.

I personally love this whole region for its beautiful landscapes, lively atmosphere and real Italian charm. I keep coming back, and every time there are new places to discover.
