Matera

Matera is one of the most incredible places you can visit in Italy, and once you see it, you’ll understand why!

Famous for its ancient cave houses, winding stone streets, and breathtaking views, Matera feels like a city from another world. And the best part? You can actually stay in one of its historic caves!

Located in Southern Italy, Matera is home to the famous Sassi di Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with thousands of years of history. But beyond its fascinating past, it’s also an incredibly romantic and photogenic destination, especially when the city lights up after sunset.

Whether you’re planning a day trip or a romantic weekend, Matera is absolutely worth adding to your Italy itinerary.

In this mini guide, I’ll share where to stay, what to see, the best things to book, and my personal tips to help you plan an unforgettable visit!

My Personal Matera Tips

01

Stay in a cave hotel

If your budget allows, book one of Matera’s beautiful cave hotels with a view of the Sassi. Sleeping in a historic cave surrounded by centuries-old stone buildings is a truly special experience!

02

Arrange your transport in advance

Matera isn’t as easy to reach as Italy’s major cities. If you’re not renting a car, plan your transfers and connections in advance, especially if you’re arriving from Bari Airport.

03

Try the local food

Don’t leave Matera without trying some local specialties! Look for orecchiette pasta, dishes with fresh burrata, and Matera’s famous crusty bread. The food here shares many traditions with nearby Puglia.

04

Wear comfortable shoes

Matera’s old town is full of steep streets, uneven stone paths, and countless steps that can get surprisingly slippery. Wear your most comfortable shoes with good grip, especially when exploring the Sassi.
